On Friday, August 26th, 2005, cult icon and "B" movie actor Bruce "Don't Call Me Ash" Campbell made an appearance in Kansas City Missouri at the Screenland Theatre. On a tour promoting his new book "Make Love *The Bruce Campbell Way", Bruce was doing signings and also sharing a little treat with his fans. He was showing his latest movie, "Man With The Screaming Brain" which he wrote, directed, produced and starred in for the Sci-Fi Channel. The movie will be premiering on Saturday September 10th on the Sci-Fi Channel and be out on DVD on October 4th.
The movie was screened 3 times that night and all three shows were sold out before the first one started! That's 450 people! There were dozens more hanging around the theatre trying to get tickets either through the generosity of others or outright bribery. And that's not all that were there. Close to 600 people showed up for the book signing which started at 5:00 p.m. and went well past 9:00 p.m. before he got through the majority of the crowd. AND he stayed the whole night signing for anyone that bought his book! How fucking great is that?!
Before each showing, Bruce came into the theatre to introduce the movie and answer a few questions. He mentioned everything from the average Bulgarian workers monthly income (a disgustingly pathetic $110!!!) and talking about Sam Raimi and the Spider-man movies to the state of "major" motion pictures and the summer releases (which he said were all "B" movies and he's right by the way) Bruce was quick-witted and sharp as a tack. Clearly he's dealt with fans before and came prepared with both barrels of his trademark shotgun loaded for bear and ready for a good time.
I missed seeing Bruce at SDCC and am really glad I got the opportunity to see him here in town. He's a really gracious and intelligent man and I look forward to his next project, a zombie movie set in Oregon where he plays himself. Should be a good time.
Oh and "Screaming Brain" is a decent enough film. For Sci-Fi anyway.
And now for what keeps you heathens coming back - the photos!
